§1 μηδέποτε ἐπὶ μηδενὸς εἴπῃς ὅτι ἀπώλεσα αὐτό, ἀλλʼ ὅτι ἀπέδωκα. τὸ παιδίον ἀπέθανεν; ἀπεδόθη. γυνὴ ἀπέθανεν; ἀπεδόθη. τὸ χωρίον ἀφῃρέθην. οὐκοῦν καὶ τοῦτο ἀπεδόθη. ἀλλὰ κακὸς ἀφελόμενος. τί δὲ σοὶ μέλει, διὰ τίνος σε δοὺς ἀπῄτησε; μέχρι δʼ ἂν διδῷ, ὡς ἀλλοτρίου αὐτοῦ ἐπιμελοῦ, ὡς τοῦ πανδοχείου οἱ παριόντες.

The Editor

Karl Schenkl (1827–1900) was an Austrian classical scholar and Professor at the Universities of Innsbruck, Graz, and Vienna. He produced Teubner editions of several Greek and Latin authors, including Epictetus. Schenkl was known for his careful manuscript collation and his contributions to the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL).
