§1 ἐφʼ ἑκάστου τῶν προσπιπτόντων μέμνησο ἐπιστρέφων ἐπὶ σεαυτὸν ζητεῖν, τίνα δύναμιν ἔχεις πρὸς τὴν χρῆσιν αὐτοῦ. ἐὰν καλὸν ἴδῃς καλήν, εὑρήσεις δύναμιν πρὸς ταῦτα ἐγκράτειαν· ἐὰν πόνος προσφέρηται, εὑρήσεις καρτερίαν· ἂν λοιδορία, εὑρήσεις ἀνεξικακίαν. καὶ οὕτως ἐθιζόμενόν σε οὐ συναρπάσουσιν αἱ φαντασίαι.

The Editor

Karl Schenkl (1827–1900) was an Austrian classical scholar and Professor at the Universities of Innsbruck, Graz, and Vienna. He produced Teubner editions of several Greek and Latin authors, including Epictetus. Schenkl was known for his careful manuscript collation and his contributions to the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL).
