The Editor

Karl Jacobitz (1810–1889) was a German classical scholar who produced the standard Teubner edition of Lucian's complete works. Working systematically through the large and varied Lucianic corpus, Jacobitz collated manuscripts and established texts for dozens of dialogues, satires, and rhetorical exercises. His edition was the scholarly standard for over half a century.

About This Edition

Jacobitz's Teubner Lucian, published in multiple volumes during the mid-19th century, provided the first comprehensive critical edition of Lucian's works. The text is based on manuscript collation with a full apparatus criticus. M. D. Macleod's OCT (1972–1987) has since superseded Jacobitz for most scholarly purposes, but the Teubner edition remains frequently cited in older secondary literature.
