Squat Lekythos Depicting a Seated Woman

Red-figure 6256 · Lekythos · 442-420 BCE (Classical)

This red-figure squat lekythos depicts a woman sitting on a diphros to the right, leaning slightly forward. She casts forth something, most of which is lost, from her right hand; her lower left arm rests on her left thigh. She wears a chiton, earring, serpentine bracelets, and a diadem.A seated woman is a common subject on squat lekythoi. It is unclear what the woman on this vase is throwing, but a ball is a possibility.

For the latest information about this object, Squat Lekythos Depicting a Seated Woman, visit the Online Collection of the Walters Art Museum.
