The Editor

Hugh Gerard Evelyn-White (1884–1924) was a British classical scholar and archaeologist who produced the Loeb Classical Library edition of Hesiod, the Homeric Hymns, and Homerica (1914). He also worked as an archaeologist in Egypt before his early death at the age of forty. His Loeb volume brought together the major works of early Greek epic poetry outside the Iliad and Odyssey.

About This Edition

Evelyn-White's Loeb edition presents Hesiod's Theogony, Works and Days, and Shield of Heracles alongside the Homeric Hymns and other Homerica, with facing English translations. Following Loeb convention, the Greek text is based on existing critical editions. For the Homeric Hymns, T. W. Allen's OCT (1912) and N. Richardson's commentary (2010) provide more recent treatments. For Hesiod, M. L. West's OCT (1966) and his commentary on the Theogony (1966) and Works and Days (1978) are now the standard references.
