Attic Red-Figure Trefoil Oinochoe, Shape 1

Red-figure Richmond Painter · Oinochoe · about 440 B.C.
The jug has a high handle, a trefoil mouth and an offset neck. There is a fillet between the body and ogee foot. At the shoulder, a band of egg pattern with dots in the interstices, between black lines. There is a circumscribed pendant palmette at the lower handle root. and running meanders to the right below the figures and encircling the body. Black thumbprints can be seen at the right end of the egg pattern and on the handle palmette. The interior is glazed throughout.

Artemis and Apollo sacrificing at an altar. The altar, at center, has a fire (added red) burning atop it. Artemis stands at right, pouring wine from an oinochoe onto the ground. She wears a chiton, himation and stephane. Her hair is tied in a krobylos with a fillet. Apollo, on the left, holds out a phiale to pour out wine. He wears a himation and is crowned with a laurel wreath. He holds a laurel branch in his left hand. A kalos inscription runs between the two deities, and there is a graffito underfoot.
