Agricola

biography

A biography of Tacitus's father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, who governed Britain and campaigned in Scotland. On the surface, it's a tribute to a good man under a bad emperor. Underneath, it's an essay on how to survive tyranny with your honour intact — and whether survival itself is honourable. The speech Tacitus gives to the Caledonian chieftain Calgacus before the Battle of Mons Graupius contains the most famous indictment of empire ever written: 'They make a desert and call it peace.'
