Octavia

drama

The only surviving Roman historical drama. Nero divorces and exiles his first wife Octavia to marry Poppaea. Seneca himself appears as a character, trying to restrain the emperor's cruelty and failing. Octavia is dragged away to her death. Almost certainly not by Seneca — it describes events after his own death — but preserved among his works. A portrait of tyranny from the inside.
