Strabo

64 BC – c. AD 24

Greek Augustan

Strabo was born around 64 BC in Amaseia in Pontus. His Geography in seventeen books is the most comprehensive geographical work to survive from antiquity. It describes the known world from Spain to India, combining physical geography, ethnography, history, and political description.

Strabo was not just a compiler. He had strong opinions about method and a Stoic framework that saw the inhabited world as a coherent whole. His descriptions of cities, peoples, and landscapes remain vivid, and for many regions of the ancient world the Geography is our most detailed source.
