Red-figure Skyphos · Late 4th century B.C.
ITALIAN VASE PAINTING in ITALY, #175 (12.1181) Skyphos Faliscan Possibly the Fluid Group (Beazley); attributed to the Barbarano Group (Cavagnaro Vanoni and Serra Ridgway); attributed to the Circle of Ful Sakkos Painter (Padgett and Hermann) Late 4th century B.C. A: A large femal head wearing a sakkos is in profile to the left. There are traces of yellow on the spotted sakkos. B: A bird, possibly a dove, stands in profile to the left, its feathers drawn in black, yellow, and white. There are palmettes and scrolling tendrils under the handles and framing the figures. Similar skyphoi from Tarquinia (e.g., Tarquinia 69708 and 69710) have been assigned to the Barbarano Group by Cavagnaro Vanoni and Serra Ridgway (Vasi etruschi, p. 85, no. 69). Within this group, very similar skyphoi, again from Tarquinia, have been attributed to the Full Sakkos Group by Pianu (Figure rosse, nos. 60,62,70,73-75O). The inspiration may have been Campanian skyphoi such as Budapest T. 777(CVA 1 pl. 48, 4-7).
