[Sculptural fragment - dancing Maenad in high relief]

1865
Dimitrios Constantin documented a fragment of a sculptural relief showing the figure of a maenad draped in heavily stylized robes; suggesting movement, the drapery undulates over her form. In ancient Greek mythology, maenads were female devotees of the god Dionysos. Through a frenzy of dancing, drinking, and eating-usually raw flesh--the women became possessed with the god's spirit.
