Red-Figure Kalpis

Red-figure Polygnotos · about 440 B.C.
Base of the neck, shoulder, handles, and part of the body of a kalpis. The primary record for a partially reconstructed vessel with Nereids bringing arms to Achilles.
Achilles (missing his head) is muffled in a himation and sits on a klismos inside a tent. Phoinix leans on a staff outside the tent. Six Nereids riding dolphins approach from either side. From the left, a Nereid carries a pair of greaves, one in each hand. The second Nereid looks back and holds a sword in its scabbard in her left hand. The third Nereid wears a sakkos and holds a Thracian helmet with a long plume. Thetis bears a shield (star blazon) and spear. The fifth Nereid is frontal faced and bears a cuirass, and the sixth carries a chitoniskos (?). Waves (added white, now faded) are visible beneath some of the dolphins.
Below the figural scene, broad band of lotus and palmette. On the neck, band of lotus and palmette. At base of the handles, ovolo pattern.
