Red-Figure Cup

Red-figure Penthesilea Painter · Kylix · about 470–450 B.C.
The cup is reconstructed from fragments, and includes a fragment on loan from the Musée du Louvre ([Cp 11492](https://collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/53355/cl010354235)).

On the interior a man propositions a woman. At the left, the man supports himself on a knotty stick and leans toward the woman, who wears a chiton, himation, and slippers. On either side of the figures are various objects, including a phormiskos (pear-shaped vessel), a wool basket, a dipper, and the foot of a bed with a striped mattress. Above the bed is a hanging lotus. The tondo border is a meander pattern with cross-squares. On the exterior are pairs of standing figures, men or youths and women.
