Portrait of a Philosopher

about A.D. 400
This man’s long hair and beard and his intent gaze mark him as a philosopher. A chiton covers his left shoulder and part of the upper chest. Although the portrait is based on a Greek original of about 300 B.C., details of the carving—notably the treatment of the eyes, with the pupils shown as concentric circles—suggest that this is a Roman copy of around A.D. 400.
