Name & Etymology
Real name known from signed works. Douris signed as painter (Douris egrapsen) on numerous vases. One of the most frequently signed ancient Greek vase-painters.
Attribution Confidence High
Over 30 signed works. Very large corpus of approximately 300 attributed vases. Strong stylistic consistency across a long career. Attribution framework universally accepted.
Douris was one of the leading Athenian red-figure cup-painters, active c. 500–460 BC. With over 300 attributed vases and more than 30 signatures, he is one of the best-documented ancient Greek painters. He was remarkably versatile, decorating scenes from mythology, daily life, the symposium, and athletics with equal skill. His long career shows clear stylistic development from an early Archaic manner to a more Classical style.
Scholarly Controversies
Debate about whether Douris also potted some of his own vases. His early career attributions (before the signed works) are less certain. Some vases in the "manner of Douris" may be by close followers.
