Oinochoe Prochoös

Oinochoe · about late 4th century B.C.
Conventional decoration in white, yellow, brown, and red. Above foot incised band of tongue pattern; broad band through which runs a red line with leaf-like tongues; then a scroll. VASE PAINTING in ITALY, #120 (01.8112) Epichysis about 330 B.C. The bands of ornament framed by incised lines do not fully circle the body. At midbody is a broad wreath with leaves alternately beige, yellow, and white. Below this is a band of crudely executed, incised and white-painted egg-pattern. Below the white rays on the neck are three superimposed bands of ornament: incised and white-painted egg-pattern, a red and yellow fillet, and white scrolling tendrils. A rosy wash colors the concavity between body and foot. Compare a jug in the Dechter collection, Los Angeles: K. Hamma, ed., The Dechter Collection of Greek Vases (San Bernadino, 1989), p. 66, no. 39. Compare also two jugs once in the Swiss market: Italische Keramik., Münzen und Medaillen AG, Sonderliste U (Basel, 1984), nos. 86-87.
