Lekythos with Two Figures and Winged Sepulchur

White-ground 5203 · Lekythos · ca. 420-410 BCE (Classical)
This white-ground shoulder lekythos depicts a youth and a woman at a tomb. On the left a woman stands nearly frontally to the right, her head and left leg in profile. She wears a peplos and gestures as in grief with both hands. In the center a rectangular stele with pedimental finial sits on top of a two-step base. Traces of ribbons are visible on the lower step and lower part of the stele. On the right a youth in a chitoniskos and chlamys bends over to the left leaning on two spears. His right hand rests beneath his chin. He has a pestasos hanging down his back and a belt around his waist. For the latest information about this object, Lekythos with Two Figures and Winged Sepulchur, visit the Online Collection of the Walters Art Museum.
