Head of a Man

425–400 B.C.
The slightly tilted head is characterized by a full face, short nose, and tightly closed, fleshy mouth. Dense, striated hair is gathered in broad, distinct locks arranged over a low forehead and combed into a roll behind the nape of the neck. The globular eyes are asymmetrical, with marked irises. These features—particularly the full chin and dense, rolled hair—are typical formal features of Severe-style sculpture from Sicily and Magna Graecia dating from the fifth to early fourth centuries B.C.
