Group of Attic Red-Figure Type A Kantharos Fragments (18)

Red-figure Onesimos · Kantharos · early 5th century B.C.
Preserved on the exterior of this fragmentary kantharos are:
A: Death of Aegisthus. In the center of the scene, Orestes prepares to stab Aegisthus. Aegisthus is seated on a plain chair, facing left; he wears only a himation. He holds up his scepter as a defense against Orestes' attack. A lyre sits beside his chair. Orestes, facing right, wears a fillet in his hair. His sword arm is swung back to the rear. Behind him stands Klytemnaistra. She wears her hair in a bun and has a jeweled fillet. She wears a red-corded chiton and a himation. Behind Aegisthus stands one of Orestes' sisters. She wears a himation and red-corded chiton.
B: Chariot scene; perhaps the departure of Amphiaraos. Three horses stand quietly, facing left. Beneath their forefeet is the bare left leg of a man, extended almost horizontally. To the right, beside the animals, is the patterned hem of a himation.
