Fragmentary Panathenaic Amphora

Swing Painter · Amphora · about 540–530 B.C.
Side A: Athena strides to left between two Doric columns surmounted by cocks facing the goddess. She carries a spear in her raised right hand and a shield (blazon: tripod) over her left arm. Side B: Two nude youths wrestling, arms interlocked; a dinos, presumably the prize, is on the ground between them. They are flanked by judges or trainers. Fragmentary, lower body and foot missing. Glaze and accessory colors are well preserved, but the glaze misfired, turning slightly greenish, in most areas. After Clark, A., Malibu CVA 1 (1988).
