Fragmentary Attic Red-Figure Oinochoe

This oinochoe is partially reconstructed from fragments. It has a torus foot and the handle is segmental in section. There is an egg pattern with dotted interstices on the shoulder while the lower handle attachment contains a upright circumscribed palmette with black dot and two arcs in the heart. An enclosing tendril loops back from the heart and terminates outside the enclosed area; within each loop is a reserved dot. Below the figured scene, running around the body, are broken stopped meanders to the right. The side of the foot is reserved and the interior is glazed black. The subject of the figured scene is a music lesson. On the left stands a youth, facing right; his lower body is lost. Clad in a himation, he holds a staff in his extended right hand. In front of him hangs an aulos case of spotted skin. Seated just left of center, on a diphros with a striped cushion, is a second youth, facing right and clad in a himation. He holds a lyre in his left hand and looks down at the instrument. His right hand is raised, his left leg bent. A writing tablet hangs above his head. The right side of the composition is mostly lost, though part of a staff in front of the musician shows that he faced a standing male, also mantled and facing left; his left foot is shown in three-quarter view.
