Fragmentary Attic Red-Figure Nestoris

Around the top of the broad lip is a pursuit scene. A man leaning on a staff looks to the right as a woman holding a hydria flees to left, looking back. The next figure is largely lost (only an outstretched hand remains), and to the right is another woman moving rightwards with arms outstretched. Another draped male with a staff is partially preserved at the other handle. Another trio is depicted around the other side of the mouth: two women moving away from a central figure, who is a male holding a torch (?). One of the women holds a tendril.

Under the mouth, bands of tongue pattern and laurel leaves. Around the neck, addorsed horizontal palmettes with tendrils. Band of tongues below.

The upper register shows scenes of pursuit. On one side, Boreas chases Oreithyia (not preserved). Two women flee to the left. On the other side, Eos pursues Cephalus. Another youth (chlamys, two staffs) flees to the right. Two more youths run away to the left, one with petasos, chlamys and two staffs, the other with pilos, chlamys and club (?)

The lower register contains twelve wreathed revellers, some bearded or carrying staffs. One holds a skyphos, another plays a lyre. Rays below.

On the exterior of the long handles, a draped youth. The more fully preserved handle also shows a writing tablet. The inner plates of the handles are decorated with a chequerboard pattern, pierced with holes at five points. The points of the handles are topped with white tips (compare 81.AE.183.2) This vase has no foot.
