Fragmentary Attic Red-Figure Calyx Krater

Red-figure Syleus Painter · Krater · 480–470 B.C.
Reconstructed from fragments. Around the body - Amazonomachy consisting of four groups:
(i) a trio consisting of Herakles about to inflict the fatal blow against the fallen Andromache as her comrade comes to protect her; (ii) a fleeing Amazon, above the handle, collapsing as she is speared by her attacker. Another Greek is restored as his companion; (iii) a second trio, this time with the Amazon prevailing over a fallen Greek as his comrade comes to defend him; and (iv) a similar group to (iii), with the addition of an Amazon archer on the left.

Around the mouth, upright palmette and lotus pattern. On the cul, palmettes.
A number of small fragments have not been incorporated into the krater. See individual records for details.
