Drinking cup (skyphos) with face of a gorgon
The head of a gorgon stares out from each side of this skyphos. The gorgon’s fangs and teeth are painted in white and her protruding tongue is painted red, drawing attention to her terrifying grimace. Her beard and the warts between her eyebrows dramatize her ugliness. Her enormous eyes are comprised of a series of concentric circles, painted in red and black, all surrounded by bright white paint. Her hair is painted in alternating red and black strips.
