Campanian Neck Amphora

OWL-PILLAR GROUP · Amphora · early 5th century B.C.
This vase is unbroken except for a minor chip on the lip. On side A is a bearded man standing to left in front of a volute krater on a plinth. His body is completely enveloped in his himation. On side B is a draped woman standing to right in front of a fluted column with a rectangular Ionic capital. On the underside of the base, written in pencil, is the note, "Found by myself at an Excavation at Nola." This vase was part of the Castle Ashby Collection, which was assembled by the Second Marquess of Northampton during a residence in Italy in the 1820s.
