Body Fragment of a Relief Pithos

650–625 B.C.
Two horses standing on their hind legs face each other on this relief from the body of a large pithos (storage vessel). The animals support their lowered forelegs on a block with spirals, possibly an altar. Impressed rosettes decorate the left and right borders of the relief, while a spiral wave pattern runs along the lower edge. Cretan potters often decorated pithoi with molded animals and mythological figures.
