Attic Red-Figure Stamnos

Red-figure Harrow Painter · Stamnos · 470–460 B.C.
This stamnos is nearly complete, reconstructed from fragments. It is decorated with a meander band around the rim and another as the groundline on the body. Side A depicts the departure of a youth. On the right, the youth stands behind his horse wearing a short chiton, chlamys and petasos. He carries two spears in his right hand and turns his head back to look at an old man dressed in chiton and himation carrying a staff in his right hand. His white hair is an indicator of his age. On Side B are three mantled youths in conversation. The two outer youths face each other and both hold staffs in their right hands and point at the youth in the center who faces right with his hand splayed out, emerging from underneath his himation.
