Attic Red-Figure Squat Lekythos

Red-figure Polion · Lekythos · about 425–420 B.C.
A satyr before a sphinx. The satyr stands to the left in a half-crouch, bending forward and resting his left hand on his thigh. Balding and nude, he raises his right hand to point at the sphinx who sits on a rock to the right. Her wings are upraised. Between these two figures is a large tendril crowned with a single pointed bud. The neck is decorated with a row of tongues, and below the picture is a dotted egg pattern. The vessel was reconstructed from several fragments.
