Attic Red-Figure Skyphos

Red-figure Penelope Painter · Skyphos · 450–440 B.C.
An intact skyphos. Side A: A youth wearing a himation, petasos, and boots, holds a spear in his right hand and the reins of a horse in his left. The horse is in front, standing on a rocky outcrop, facing right with reins, bridle, and mane in added red. Side B: A draped boy leads a horse, facing left. The horse is much larger than the boy. The reins were rendered with added pigment, but now only the paint shadow remains. In the handle zones is a large, upright palmette flanked by two volute tendrils with leaves.
