Attic Red-Figure Oinochoe, Shape 4

The vase has a high, ridged handle, a round mouth with an offset rim, and a spreading torus foot with a broad fillet. There is one tooled groove at the join of the rim and neck, and another just below the rim. At the neck and beneath the figures, a band of egg pattern with dots in the interstices. The side of the foot is reserved. The vase is assembled from numerous fragments.

On the body, three female musicians. All have short, wavy hair and round earrings. At left, a woman in three-quarter view to right sits on a stool (diphros) playing the double pipes (auloi). She wears a chiton and himation. At the center a peplos-wearing woman stands in three quarter view. She carries a chest on her head, steadying it with her left hand, and holds a tympanum in her right. The third woman sits on a stool with a lyre. She faces left in three-quarter view, and wears a coiled band on her arm.
