Red-figure Phiale Painter · Lekythos · about 450 B.C.
A young soldier stands before a woman who stretches out her hands to him. Wearing a wreath on his head, he is armed with his shield (blazon: snake) and spear and holds his helmet. The preliminary drawing for the soldier's body is visible. The two figures stand above a simple meander band. Above, a band of meanders in groups of three, alternating direction, separated by a saltire square. On the reserved shoulder, palmette pattern and ovolo band above. Area of misfire at upper right. Under the handle, 'ghost' of a section of meander pattern.
