Attic Red-Figure Kylix Type B

Red-figure Skythes · Kylix · about 510 B.C.
Most of the cup depicting and athlete and warriors is preserved, restored from fragments.

Interior: Inside a tondo, a youthful athlete facing right holding a discus. In the background are jumping weights, javelins, and a pick suggesting a palaestra setting. An inscription appears around the figure. The inscription, the athlete's wreath, and the thong around the javelins are in added red.

Exterior: On Side A, two Greek hoplites in full armor do battle with spears and shields. The device on the shield of the soldier on the right is a light-armed peltast. On Side B, a warrior in Thracian costume, facing right pursues a figure on horseback, perhaps Troilos. The upper part of the mounted figure is missing. The warrior on foot carries a spear and a crescent shield and wears a pointed cap and patterned cloak. Inscriptions on both sidesin added red. Palmettes and lotus buds fill the space around the handles.
