Attic Red-Figure Cup Type B

Red-figure Tarquinia Painter · Kylix · about 470 B.C.
Interior: a youth wearing a cloak (himation) and fillet sits in a chair, holding a knotty staff. To the left, a shield hangs from the wall, and below is an empty helmet shelf.
The outside of the bowl depicts a symposium. One side (side A) depicts three men reclining on pillows. The man on the far left holds a shallow dish (phiale) in his left hand, the man in the middle plays a stringed instrument (barbiton), and the man on the far right holds a drinking cup (skyphos) in his left hand. Objects adorn the wall behind the figures; from left to right, a basket, a flute case, a mouthpiece box, and a shield.
The other side of the cup (side B) depicts a man reclining between two youths. Both the first and second man stretch out their right arms. The second man holds a phiale. The third raises his right arm at a bent angle to his head, and holds a skyphos in his left. On the wall behind the figures are two hanging baskets, and at the center, a hanging shield and an empty helmet shelf. The men recline on striped pillows. This object was mended in antiquity. On Side A, two repair holes are visible on the right thigh of the second symposiast, two more on the covered shield, and one on the skyphos of third symposiast. Traces of an extensively corroded staple in one of the repair holes.
