Red-figure Sabouroff Painter · Kylix · about 460 B.C.
I: Zeus moving to right wearing a short chiton and a himation over his outstretched left arm. In his left hand, he holds a striped staff with a lotus finial. He wears a fillet around his head. In the exergue: ESATIK (perhaps "to Attica", according to Erika Simon in Munzen und Medaillen 1980). Stopped meander pattern with cross squares for tondo border.
A: Komos of three old men, dressed as women, dancing. The left komast dances to right, right arm held out, left bent, hand at hip. He faces the central dancer, who bends forwards, each arm held out. At the right, the third stands looking back, both arms bent and raised, hands at head level. Each wears a thick fillet around his head a long belted chiton and slippers with pointed toes.
B: As A. The left komast dances to left, looking back, with his right hand at his head, left arm outstretched. The second figure stands frontally, arms akimbo, head turned to the left. The third dances to the right, arms stretched towards a staff with a phallus-shaped finial.
Under handles - palemtte and tendril; to the right and left of both handles, an ivy leaf.
A graffito (alpha phi) is incised under the foot.
