Attic Red-Figure Calyx Krater Fragment

Red-figure Krater · about 430 B.C.
Five fragments, which make up most of the front of a small calyx krater. The decoration is divided into two zones. Above: sacrifice of a ram, and a fight between warriors. Below: two young warriors carrying the body of a fallen male, towards a grieving youth. For more details, see individual records. Based on comparison with a red-figure stamnos in Basel (BS 477), which shows Ajax or Achilles fighting Hektor over the body of a ram labelled PAT (for Patroklos), a similar narrative has been identified here, with the fight above and the body of Patroklos being brought to Achilles below. Around the rim, laurel band. Dividing the scenes, ovolo band. On the cul, laurel band. Interior, black.
