Attic Red-Figure Calyx Krater

Red-figure Nekyia Painter · Krater · about 440 B.C.
Side A: Three standing figures. In the center is a youth, facing right, and dressed in traveling clothes (chlamys and petasos) and high-laced sandals. He strides right, carrying two spears in his left hand and stretching his right arm toward woman, chasing her. She runs to the right. She wears an ungirded sleeveless chiton and a head sakkos. To the left, another woman strides left and looks back toward the youth. She wears a chiton and a bordered himation. Her hair is wrapped with a ribbon and the youth also wears a fillet. Side B: Two bearded men flank a woman in the center who strides right, but looks left. All have fillets in added red. The left man raises his arm in a gesture of speaking, the right holds a staff; both wear himatia. The woman is dressed in a chiton and himation; her head and both arm are covered by her garments. There are reserved rings around the inside at the top and bottom of the flaring mouth. On the exterior, under the rim, there is a band of enclosed palmettes between reserve bands. Below, there is a reserve goundline and a stopped meander band interrupted with squares containing a cross and four dots. More reserve appears at the outer edge of the top of the foot and the lower edge of the bottom. There is a hole in the bottom of the krater and the bottom of the interior has been chipped away.
