Attic Black-Figure Volute Krater Fragment

Belongs with three other non-joining fragments of a volute krater’s rim and neck. (86.AE.109.2, .3, and .4). Flaring lip, reserved on the topside, with red lines on the inner and outer edges. The inside of the neck is glazed, with a red line on the top. The side of the rim is reserved, with leftward key between two glaze lines. The upper section of the neck is offset and reserved, with figured decoration between two glaze lines

Departure scene. On 86.AE.109.1, at the left edge, the projecting glazed area preserves a tiny portion of the upper handle attachment. In the figured zone, the fragment preserves (from left to right): a youth in a himation standing to right; a warrior to left, looking to right (equipped with low-crested Corinthian helmet, cuirass, sheathed sword and baldric, short chiton, spear, and Boeotian shield [blazon: rosette between snakes]); a quadriga to right (chariot and the tail of one horse preserved), with a charioteer in a sleeveless long chiton holding the reins and a goad; and a draped man standing to right behind the horse's tail.
