Attic Black-Figure Olpe (Shape 1)

Black-figure Painter of Wurzburg 351 · about 490 B.C.
Black-figure olpe, type 1. Echinus rim. It is restored from fragments and the handle is not preserved. There is a chequer pattern on front of rim, then a band of Greek key and a zone of two rows of dots. A bearded male, Dionysus, heavily draped, with hair in a bun and holding a horn stands facing right. There is a red patch on the beard. At the right, a satyr looks back, his knees bent as if ready for movement. There is red on the hair and beard, and the moustache is painted white. In the field, there is a plant ornament.
