Attic Black-Figure Kalpis

On the shoulder, departure of warriors. On the left, a youth steps into the chariot box of a quadriga, facing right. He wears a petasos, short chiton, and greaves. On his back, he carries a Boeotian shield (blazon: balls), and in his hands he holds a goad and the chariot’s reins. On the far side of the horses, a youth in a Scythian cap walks to right and looks left. He holds an axe in his right hand. Before the horses, an old man sits to left on a block. He wears a long chiton and himation, and holds a staff in his right hand.

The hydria has an overhanging torus lip. The interior of the neck is glazed to a depth of 3.7 cm. Around the neck, a red line. All three handles are round in profile and are reserved inside. The decorative panel on the shoulder is surmounted by a red line, framed by a double-net pattern on the sides and a zone of dentils underneath. Below the panel, in a reserved zone between the handles, a row of horizontal circumscribed palmettes with ivy leaves in the interstices. The torus foot is reserved on the outer edge and underneath, with traces of red in the groove around the base of the body.
