Attic Black-Figure Eye Cup Fragment

Black-figure Kylix · about 520–500 B.C.
Rim fragment from an eye-cup of type A. Exterior: between black eyes (only inner edges preserved), Dionysos riding side-saddle on a donkey. Only the lower body of Dionysos survives, and he wears a himation over a long chiton. The donkey is ithyphallic. In the field, vines with dot-leaves.

The figures stand on a black line. Below, two more lines, then two bands, three lines and a zone of alternately outlined and black rays (the tips of two rays are visible). The interior of the bowl is black save for the tondo. Around the tondo, two reserved circles, perhaps the frame for a gorgoneion.
