Attic Black-Figure Band Cup Fragment (joins to 85.AE.446)

Black-figure Kylix · 550–500 B.C.
Lip fragment. The interior is black and undecorated. The exterior of the lip consists of black, reserve, and dilute glaze bands. There are two registers of figural decoration. The top register shows three hoplites running to the right; only part of the leg and shield of the leftmost figure are visible. They run toward another male figure facing left, holding an object in his hands. The dilute glaze ground line curves to meet the dilute glaze line above it, behind the left-facing figure. In the register below are depicted two partial soldiers with helmets and spears. Added red and white is used for their shields. The helmet and arm of a third figure is also preserved. Interior glazed black. Joins to 85.AE.446, completing the leftmost figure, continuing the ground line and adding another figure to the left and in the lower register.
