Apulian Red-Figure Calyx Krater Fragment

Red-figure Darius Painter · Krater · about 350 B.C.
Composed of two joining fragments: Part of a chariot race, with three horses galloping to right past the turning post. At left, only part of the head, reins and a thin portion of the chest survive. Most of the head, chest and forelegs of the middle horse are preserved. Of the third, most of the body, neck and forelegs survive. On its flank is a small rosette of dots, perhaps a brand. At the far right edge of the fragment are a part of the rail and of the leading chariot's wheel rim as well as a bit of the drapery of the charioteer.
