Apulian Lekanis

Stoke-on-Trent Painter · about 330 B.C.
Lid: between palmette-fans and reserved bands, two female heads in profile to left. One wears a white-bordered hair covering (kekryphalos) with black stripes, a white hair ribbon, a pendant earring, and a necklace. The other wears a snood (sakkos) decorated with white and black stripes and a row of black strokes below the white peak. She also wears a white stephane, a circular earring, and a necklace.

The domed lid is reserved within, with a downturned rim. A reverse-wave pattern decorates its outer edge. The hub of the knobbed handle is recessed and decorated with a rosette. The bowl has an inset rim and a conical foot, and is completely black.

After Jentoft-Nilsen, M. R. and Trendall, A.D., CVA Malibu 3 (1990).
