Amphora (Storage Jar)

Black-figure the Painter of Tarquinia RC 3984 · Amphora · About 560 BCE

This vessel was made at a time when Athenian trade networks were expanding into coastal Italy, which was then controlled by Etruscans. Imported Greek goods became highly sought-after in Italy, and local potters began to produce ceramics that drew upon the most popular Athenian styles. The scenes on this vase reflect the cultures’ varying levels of militarization by depicting armed soldiers on horseback.
