Hipp. 1238: abs., στρατὸς κακῶς ς. handled roughly, in sorry plight, A. Ag. 670.

III. eat greedily, devour, Id. Pax 1306; ὀβελίαν Pherecr. 55; cf. παίω 111. (There is no indication of any connexion of this Verb with σποδός, except perh. in Cratin. l.c.)
