A. bearing a staff, baton, or sceptre as the badge of command, ς. βασιλεύς a sceptred king, Il. 2.86, Od. 2.231, etc.; ὅς τις ς. εἴη Il. 14.93: c. gen., θεῶν ς., of Aphrodite, Orph. H. 55.11; [Ἄρης] ἠνορέης ς. h.Mart. 6.
