A. ‐ηγόρευσα Hdt. 1.74, 125: pf. ‐ηγόρευκα D. 11.20 (v.l. ‐ευσε; but in Att. fut. is προερῶ, aor. προεῖπον, pf. προείρηκα):— Pass., fut. (in med. form) X. Eq.Mag. 2.7 : pf. ‐ηγόρευμαι Id. Mem. 1.2.[35]:—tell beforehand, τι Th. 1.68: c. inf., declare beforehand that . . , Hdt. 1.74,91; π. ὅτι . . Th. 2.13, X. Cyr. 3.1.3; ὡς . . ib.7.5.34; advise beforehand, πολλοῖς π. τὰ μὲν ποιεῖν τὰ δὲ μὴ ποιεῖν Id. Mem. 1.1.4, cf. Pl. Lg. 907d.
2. foretell, prophesy, τὸ μέλλον X. Smp. 4.5.
II. declare or proclaim publicly, τι Hdt. 7.10.δ’, 8.83; τινί τι Id. 1.153; ἰσονομίην ὑμῖν π. Id. 3.142; πόλεμον (with or without τινι) Th. 1.131, D. 11.20, etc.: c. inf., Pl. Cri. 51d: esp. of a herald or public officer, Hdt. 3.61,62; also, have a thing proclaimed by herald, ὑπὸ κήρυκος π. Id. 9.98 (though ἀναγορεύειν was properly the word for heralds, προαγορεύειν for magistrates, X. An. 2.2.20).
2. order publicly, ταῦτα Hdt. 1.22: c. inf., ib.21; π. ὑμῖν παρεῖναι ib.125, cf. 6.37; π. τοῖς πολίταις μὴ κινεῖν . . forbid them to . . , Pl. R. 426b, etc.; ὁ ἱερεὺς π. καὶ ἀπαγορεύει . . μὴ κόπτειν IG 22.1362.2: without a dat., τοὺς Ἕλληνας π. αὐτονόμους ἀφιέναι Th. 1.140, cf. X. HG 7.4.38:—Pass., γυμνάζεσθαι προαγορεύεται . . ἅπασι Id. Lac. 12.5, etc.; τὰ προηγορευμένα Id. Mem. 1.2.[35].
b. give public notice to persons accused of murder that they are excommunicated, π. εἴργεσθαι τῶν νομίμων Antipho 6.34, Arist. Ath. 57.2, cf. Antipho 5.10, Isoc. 4.157, D. 47.69 : abs., Antipho 6.48; τὴν πρόρρησιν π. Pl. Lg. 871c.
c. serve notice on persons to appear for trial, π. εἰς τρίτην ἀγορὰν παρεῖναι Plu. Cor. 18.
III. forestall an anticipated argument, Arist. SE 174b30.
