Fr. 1132.31; esp. of those absent or lost, παῖς πατρὶ π. Pi. O. 10(11).87, cf. I. 5(4).7, etc.; ποθεινὰ Ἑλλάς desire of seeing Greece, Id. P. 4.218; π. ἦλθες E. IT 515; π. ἂν μόλοις Id. Hel. 540; π. δάκρυα tears of regret, Id. Ph. 1737(lyr.): also in Com. and Prose, ἀγαθὸς ποιητὴς καὶ π. τοῖς φίλοις Ar. Ra. 84; ὦ ποθεινὴ τοῖς . . γεωργοῖς ἡμέρα Id. Pax 556 (paratrag., cf. E. II. longed for, desired, missed, E. Cyc. 620 (lyr.); ποθεινὴ δακρύοισι συμφορά desired by tears, i.e. desiring, calling for tears, Id. Med. 1221(s.v.l.).
III. Subst., perh. name of a colour (cf. πόθος 111) or kind of paint, χρίσει ποθεινῷ PCair.Zen. 445.11 (iii B. C.).
