A. little, small, στήμων Hes. Op. 538 ; π. ἔπος Pi. O. 13.98 ; of Time, short, Hes. Op. 326 ; ζωῆς μέρος Emp. 2.3 ; π. ὕπνος Pi. P. 9.25 (s.v.l.); speedy, τέλος βιότοιο Q.S. 7.613 : neut. as Adv., for a short time, παῦρον ἀνθήσας Lyc. 1429.
2. mostly of Number, few, poet. for ὀλίγος (q.v.) in this sense, Ep., Lyr., and Trag., π. ἄνδρες Thgn. 79 ; π. τινές Pi. O. 10(11).22 ; π. ἀνδρῶν A. Ag. 832 : rare in Prose, as Thphr. HP 8.7.4 ; παῦρα, opp. πολλά, Il. 9.333, cf. Od. 2.241 : with a collect. Subst., π. λαός small in number, Il. 2.675 : Comp. παυρότερος 4.407, 8.56, al., Thgn. 644 : neut. pl. παῦρα as Adv., seldom, Hes. Th. 780, Ar. Pax 764. (Cf. Lat. paucus, Goth. fawai 'few'.)
