παραφαίνω

A. show beside or by uncovering, μηδ’ αἰδοῖα . . παραφαινέμεν Hes. Op. 734 ; σπάθην Philem. 70 ; οὐδὲν παραφῆναι τοῦ σώματος give no glimpse of it, Ar. Ec. 94 ; π. τῶν ὀδόντων ὅσον ἀπόχρη τῷ ᾄδοντι Philostr. Im. 1.10 ; οἱ μαζοὶ μικρὰ τῆς ὁρμῆς παραφαίνουσιν ib.2.32.
2. produce, τὸν ὅρκον the form of oath, Ar. Lys. 183.
3. walk beside and light, show the way to a place, Id. Ra. 1362, Plu. TG 14.
4. show, demonstrate, παρέφηναν εἶναι τῆς σοφίας οὐκ ἀμύητοι Eun. VS p.468B.
II. Pass., appear, disclose itself, Pl. Tht. 199c ; ἐν τῷ νῦν λόγῳ παραφανέντι Id. Sph. 231b, cf. Arist. Po. 1449a2 ; π. σωτηρία Hierocl. in CA 2p.422M.; παραφανεὶς ὁ θεὸς ἔλεξε Archiv f.Religionswiss. 18.258 ; come into view, ofan enemy, Ascl. Tact. 10.11, 14.
